Looking For A Unique Leather Holiday Gift? Nordstrom Has You Covered
Can You Spare 85 Dollars For an "Interesting Gift"?
A rock, wrapped in a leather pouch is being sold for $85.00 by Nordstrom. The item is described as a smooth Los Angeles area stone wrapped in rich tanned American leather. Truly, Nordstrom has tapped into what people really want this 2016 holiday season and is giving the American consumer a unique gift not seen since the pet rock craze of 1975.
The New York Daily News was not very impressed as they said" At last: a gift for the person who has everything, but still wants something useless."
Surely There is Some Use For It... Right?
Nordstrom also seems wildly unsure of what they are selling: “A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone — wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching — is sure to draw attention wherever it rests.”
You can buy it here if you’re interested, although it looks like - at the time of this writing - the product has sold out.
For those who think the item is too expensive, not to worry. Nordstrom is appealing to the lower-upper class market with a smaller, $65.00 version. The stones are cut, shaped, swen, and finished by hand by Los Angeles area artist Peter Maxwell who is the owner of the leather-goods company Made Solid.
High Ratings (Seriously?)
Buyers are giving it five stars, and a host of publications are talking about it, including Cosmopolitan, Time, and Huffington Post.
SingleMotherCo commented: “As a single mother, it is often difficult to put food on the table for my 5 children. However, when I saw this piece of rock, I couldn’t help it but to purchase this item. Yes, no one in my family will eat this month, however I have a piece of rock. The leather pouch wrapping the rock is just added bonus. I can’t believe the rock is made by hand too!”
One man Tweeted “I'd like to thank Nordstrom for providing much-needed existential validation. If some jerk can sell a rock in leather for $85, I'll be ok.”
A Clever Marketing Move By Nordstrom
In reality, the public relations stunt is helping to drive a slew of traffic to Nordstrom, especially in time for the holiday season. It is getting coverage on many publications, and individuals are sharing and commenting on it.
Highsnobiety, in an article titled Nordstrom is Selling Leather-Wrapped Rocks & That’s Okay, really mentions that Nordstrom is selling us choice and freedom. By choosing what we will do with this leather wrapped stone, Nordstrom is, in fact, empowering the buyer with freedom and autonomy. And we can all agree that these are good things.
Nice move, Nordsrom.
